Periodic Project Teams
Belhaven College's ASPIRE degree programs focus on two critical learning objectives. The first of these is shared participant responsibility for self-directed learning and small group dynamics. Professional and personal growth require that individuals develop the skills necessary to manage their own learning. Throughout all of the ASPIRE courses, students are expected to seek answers to their questions and identify and develop resources for their concerns.
The second objective is to develop the interpersonal skills necessary for effective participation in groups. Project teams are an integrated part of the ASPIRE educational model. Each study group is comprised of three to five students, and is required to meet weekly outside of class for four hours (longer, if needed). Project teams function as mutual support mechanisms through which students can learn more efficient problem-solving skills from the professional expertise of peers. At Belhaven College, students and faculty members are acknowledged as major learning resources. The concept of shared learning responsibility is an essential element in the ASPIRE educational philosophy.
Students will participate in the selection and development of their groups. Most likely, convenience factors such as where they live, work, and availability to meet will influence their development. Project teams will work together on specific tasks as assigned and share in the development of the successful completion of such tasks, projects, and learning outcomes. Group grades will be awarded for oral and written projects completed within the project teams. It is, therefore, essential for study group members to make a commitment to work together to meet course objectives and complete study group assignments as instructed.
The skills one learns in project teams -- such as how to combine and share talents, experience, and learning resources -- are held in high regard by corporations and organizations. Workers who function successfully in collaborative, team-oriented work environments are often more productive and creative. These are qualities that employers seek in a highly competitive market. project teams, combined with the collaborative learning environment of the ASPIRE program, can provide students with the competitive edge needed to achieve their educational, personal, and professional goals
